(I posted this reply yesterday, but for some reason it didn't show up, so I'm reposting it. And moe: I'm in California, I know the difference between LA and la-la. It's a play on words - try to keep up, ok? Good).
moe: Harmful? Not directly. Offensive? Yeah, pretty much.I wouldn't go so far as the Nuremberg trials, but I am offended. I'll split my answer in two parts:
1) Why I think it's offensive: More then the hijab, the burka has always been a controversial issue in Muslim and non-Muslim discourses. It's seen both as a symbol of female oppression (Afghanistan comes to mind) and as something that symbolizes hardcore Islamic values (whether I agree with that or not is besides the point, but I doubt Kate will be following those values anytime soon so she fails in this aspect of using the word 'burkah' as well). If Kate B. used the word 'veil' instead of 'burkah', I might not have even given the article a second glance. But she CHOSE to use the word 'burkah'(a very specific non-English word)- knowing very well that women have died for the simple right of showing their face in public (and everything that comes with it like education and the right hold jobs). A burkah is a SYMBOL that contains all those meanings with it and more - just like a Swatstika is a SYMBOL which entails all the injustices that come with it (yes, I know the swastika symbol didn't start out that way but this is the way it is veiwed now).
2)Why the fact that Kate Beckinsale said it annoys me: Whether she likes it or not, Kate is a role model for a lot of young girls both nationally and internationally. For her to be so glib about such a controversial topic is not only setting a bad example, but it implies that it's basically OK for people to be so ethnocentric, unconsidering, and shallow.
Of course I'm judging her. With fame comes responsibility, and she's old enough to know this. It's true, I know little to nothing about the 'real' Kate, but it doesn't change my belief that the above comment is anything less than ethnocentric and stupid. I don't see anyone in Hollywood glamorizing the swastika, do you?

OK, here's the deal. I always believed that being a good actor/actress requires some level of self-awareness and intelligence. I have yet to see Kate display that either on or off the screen. This comment is pretty much the cherry on top as far as I'm concerned. I'm not biased against pretty women, I understand the industry requires some mode of attractiveness for one to be successful in it. Charlize Theron comes to mind as someone absolutely gorgeous and a good actress to boot.
As for Susan Surandon, I doubt she'd be glib/silly enough to even consider saying something like that. The fact that Surandon has so much clout in the industry (especially considering her age) is a good indication of her level of intelligence - and it shows in her acting as well. Mark my words, if Kate Beckinsale doesn't wisen up, she'll drop off the Hollywood A-list as soon as the first wrinkles start showing.
The danish cartoons: Those were political cartoons. They're offensive, yes, but they were meant to be. The people who drew them knew exactly what they were doing and probably considered the reactions they might bring about by publishing them. They disgust me. On the other hand, this whole hoopla of boycotting all Danish products and threatening innocent civillians on part of the Muslims disgusts me too. It's probably one of the reasons I haven't put up a post about it - enough has been said.
UE: You're right, I do have a weird sense of humor, but I'm a little sensitive towards women issues, especially ethnocentric ones. It's kind of a hot button with me :P
'Abayas' don't cover the face, only the body. Some women put them over their heads to cover their hair but they don't do a good job of covering anything above the neck - so they're more of a cultural preference. Had Kate said 'Abaya' or 'veil', I'd probably think it was funny too. We've all been guilty of donning an abaya because we don't feel like dressing up in order to do a quick errand.
She said 'burkah' though, with absolutely no idea what all the connotations of the word imply. Although I hate giving analogies, I think this one is appropriate:
When I first came to the States, I didn't think twice about saying "nigger". Can you imagine my American friends horror if I said "I wish I was a nigger if only to get an afro like that." My friends had to explain that it's not just the word, it's all the history behind it that makes it offensive. I have friends back home who still use the word "nigger" with no thought about what it implies. That's ethnocentric and offensive as well, and it makes me love them a little less whenever they do it. It all boils down to self-awareness. Words may be cheap but people still remember them.

I get your point :) And of course I respect it, although to me (read - Western infidel) the word "burqa" doesn't sound all that drastic. I guess you have to take cultural differences in mind. If you said "burqa" or "nigger" to me - I wouldn't have flinched. Maybe it means that I never had to bleed for my beliefs and have an easy life - but I bet so has Ms. Culturally Unaware.
On one point I agree with you absolutely - she is no brainer. At least she is yet to prove that she is, and I somehow don't see it coming. So if I were you (read - smart, educated, opinionated Arab Muslim woman) I'd just shrug her silly comment off (just as I would have done with the silly cartoons) because she is just a silly pretty face (and they are just a bunch of infidel Danes). But hey, I am not you, and I am not in a position to tell you what to do. I will simply read your blog and enjoy!
