Kuwait on Ebay

I can hardly think of a better way to waste one's time and money than to get on Ebay. So I did. Among the usual Gulf War memrobilia, I found this:

Cmon, brother. I know it's not Shangri-La down here, but it aint that bad!

(Update: I'm ashamed to say that yours truly has put a bid for the above item, and won it. It will now grace my backpack for the next few years.)

delicate Like everywhere else, Kuwait is what you make of it. Most of the Americans who get here only see Kuwait through their military camps, so it's no wonder they're not as fond of it as we are.

Going to war is inevitable for these poor bastards, I don't think sightseeing is a priority..Perhaps 'staying alive' is no?

mama fusla Unfortunately, that's true. Some of them do get a chance to spend their free time in the city. I remember seeing them walking around Salmiya in groups of 3-5. I always wondered why the stayed so close together when they're shopping.

Please don't be offended! McArabian's right, most of the american's here see little of Kuwait but a military base. Alot of the soldiers are reservists, and while they know their duty and obligation as American Soldiers is to go where they are sent and preform to the best of their abilities, few of them look forward to the day they are acually called upon to leave their families and add to the already confusing "war effort". They don't hate Kuwait (well, mostly), they just hate HAVING to be here.

As for the shopping? It's regulation to stay in groups for safety. Just a buddy system and a good idea in a strage place; be it Kuwait or New York or Hong Kong.

There is plenty to love and plenty not to anywhere you go.

Still can't remember my darn log in. UGH!

waterlilie sorry, amunki called it first :(
If I see another one, I'll be sure to let you know.

Unknown Thanks for answering the shopping question. It just feels weird watching them running around in packs, as if they're worried we're going to jump them or something. They have always been very polite though, and I saw pics of the military bases they're in , not fun. Thanks for dropping by and clearing that up..get your password and come back again :)

The Brits don't have the same regulation!
What's the American's anyways groups of 4?

Mama Fusla,

The regulation depends on a number of things; current risk assesment, military or non, gender and specific company regulations. Some private companies only "strongly advise" it, while others require check-in's and check-outs when leaving the compound.

Some companies don't have ANY regulations (like my current one, thank the heavens) and you are free to come and go as you please. I had more local adventures in my first month with my current company than I did in the previous six months with my old company. Needless to say my opinions of Kuwait are vastly different, and on the whole much more positive, now than then.

Mcarabian... mission accepted hon. I'm off to re-discover my log in info right NOW! Thanks! Love your blog.
