The Kind of Kites Your Mother Warned You About

I'm not sure if anyone has posted about this before, but there's a Power Kiting store in Kuwait (at Muthana Complex). I've met one of the owners several times and got the impression that he's in it because of his passion for the sport rather than to make a quick Dinar.

Power Kiting is basically taking the whole idea of flying a kite (one of my favourite hobbies) to an extreme level. These kites are built to be powerful enough to drag a person through the desert at remarkable speeds (for something to be fueled by just air), which is why they come in several options: You can kite surf/board on the water, kitebuggy by using buggies that are uniquely designed to handle the kites , or kitelandboard which is the desert version of kitesurfing (using special skateboards instead of surfboards). That being said, you can pretty much choose to fly the kites on your own two feet instead of letting them race you across the desert.

Wind Rider, the website for the store in Kuwait, breaks things down pretty well for the uninitiated. It also features a few movies and a photo gallery to give an idea of what the sport is all about. As with any sport that has the word 'Power' in it, safety is paramount, so you need to learn a few things before going out there and trying your hand at it. The owner did mention to me that they provide classes to whoever wants to learn. He stressed that girls especially should not be shy about applying since he believes his team to be professional and sexual harassment will not be tolerated. So if you've got the time and inclination, go check it out and tell me how it goes!

Check out the Sidiq area in Kuwait wich you can reach by driving south on Damascus street after passing the 5th RR, lots of power kiting happening there in the afternoon.

You can't miss it, just look at the sky.

I took a few shots from my camera phone but the pictures wheren't that good otherwise I would have posted them.

Damn, I only engage in life threatening sports if I get to be sexually harassed as well. Oh, well, guess I'll go back to hanging out in Hospital elevators for kicks!

Dear Misguided

Giid..I mean good. If you do check it out, I'd like to know if they rent out the equipment and/or if you have to buy the equipment to participate in the classes. :)

pizzazz I'll look for you in the sky next time I'm in Kuwait ;)

mother courage According to mark, it'll cost quite a penny to buy the equipment, it doesn't hurt to ask about rental options and classes though. Check out the store and tell me how it goes :)

mark The prices may be steep, but I'm guessing they're no more expensive than any serious hobby (photography comes to mind here). It's a fairly new sport, so equipment is probably hard to come by, especially in a place like Kuwait. Did you ask about rental options or classes? I'm curious to know.

Don Thanks for the info! People can go check out the real thing for themselves now. Next time you're there with a camera, take a couple of pics and send them to me. I'd like to see it :)

siriqbal I'm guessing hanging around the National Assembly building would be a better choice for MP harrassment. I'm still taking you tandem para-sailing once I'm done with this PhD stuff :P

Aye! So excited, definitely checking it out. I've windsurfed before (open water version where you're on a board with a sail?) but spent most of my time laying my sail down when I started going to fast and got freaked. But hey, I'm older now! Be not afraid, my new motto.

These kites can get very technical, it needs patience, specially with the type of wind we have in Kuwait (inconsistent in strength & direction)

No u can't rent them but as mentioned, shop owners and enthusiasts will be more than happy to show u...Its a growing sport (Here's a great business idea for u)

The flying camels are the 1st to introduce kiteboarding (Kite & Wakeboard, a wakeboard is just like a snowboard only on water) also KiteSkating (Kite and board without leg brace) Increadibly difficult..

tata Go for it! Just make sure you don't mess up that precious afro ;)

shady That's one of the reasons I just put it up (I've known about the store since the summer), I had a whole introductory paragraphy about the coming winter and people having a few days off in Eid to spend in the chalet/desert. But the post was long enough as it is.

bitzer Sorry I couldn't reply any sooner, but I was running around all night trying to find the impound lot that my car was towed to ('Harold and Kumar Go to Whitecastle'kind of ridiculous fiasco that can only happen to me in California). Anyway, in case you didn't find it yet: it's the big mall that's across the street from the Meridian Hotel (which is close by the Sheraton Roundabout). I'm sorry I could've give you any clearer directions - I've been up for almost 48 hours but I'm too wired to sleep right now.

unknown Haha! If you do check it out, come back and tell me about your experience :) And great motto!

mark Looks like you lucked out with meeting this guy. Most of the links given for the Kuwait section of the website either go to personal sites or lead back to the Wind Rider store. But the forum seems exactly what we need to answer our questions, great find man :)

mama fusla From the way you're talking about it, I'm guessing you've already experienced this sport? Spill ,woman, how was it?

blossom Hmm..what about strapping yourself into a buggy? That's the option I would go for since I don't have the balance/experience to use surf/land board :)

spontaneous Yubba it's not that high and you can always use the buggy option. You can't really knock it until you try it ;)

rimyoleta Thanks :) And you're right, from the movies posted on the website, it does look like a lot of fun :)

My friends Not yet, though I think this camping season I will foshizzle!

However I did skydive once and I know how strong the tug of wind against a canopy can be..

As for Kiteboarding, well..I can barely wakeboard let alone do it with a kite!

Speaking of Kiting..I think I'll buy me a 500Fils Kite from the co-op and fly it..shawagtooni!

What I love about this store is it's specialization. We have alot of things in Kuwait that stem out of pure greed vs. passion. I wish the owner the best of luck.

Finally people appreciate kiting. I remember delving into it a few years back. Professional kites doing all sorts of moves and loops, just amazing. Thos huge power kites will provide an amazing lift if you jump, but you need to move with it. The best jumps work with kite boarding, but it is too dangerous! you might break your legs if you dont know how to land. If you land hard, you must quickly roll to the side as the ebergy of the impact is transfered to the side....

ok im getting to boring here :S
