Heya 6ir Ya Grendizer!

I know this is going to date me, but does anyone remember Grendizer? It's a cartoon show that used to come on back in the day when Kuwait TV consisted of only 2 channels: one for Arabic shows, and one for English shows (which didn't start until 4 or 6 in the afternoon). When the opening theme song came on, I would run around the living room yelling the lyrics at the top of my voice - I was that excited (and I had a lot of sugar). I believe Koji Kabuto (the rakish sidekick who had a spinoff show, Mazinger Z) was my first crush. Yeah, I was a sad little kid, but moving along..

So I found this great website on Grendizer today made by an Arab fellow, and yes my dears, it has ALL the Arabic versions of the theme songs. It's well designed, easy to navigate, and answered a couple of the questions I had about Grendizer when I was a kid (turns out Grendizer is stronger than Mazinger Z).
Another great Grendizer gem lies in the bowels of Ebay. There are two auctions right now for DVD's of the Arabic version. I admit I was overcome with nostalgia and put a bid in for this one that's selling all 76 episodes on 10 discs.

To the expats who are reading this: mention Grendizer to any Kuwaiti between the ages of 25-35 and I guarantee you will get a reaction.
To the Kuwaities: What was the name of that cartoon that had the battles in live action (with a guy in a really bad dinosaur suit)? I remember the main characters were called Lamees and Kamal, but I can't find the real name of the show.

Tag stuff, feel free to skip:

From The All Time Best 100 Novels List (which I don't agree with):
How many titles do you recognize: 45
Which ones have you read: 21
Animal Farm, Are You There God? It's Me McArabian, The Blind Assassin, Catch-22, Catcher in The Rye, Gone With the Wind, The Grapes of Wrath, The Great Gatsby, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Lolita, Lord of the Flies, Lord of the Rings, Mrs. Dalloway, Naked Lunch, Neuromancer, 1984, A Passage to India, Snow Crash, The Sun Also Rises, To Kill A Mocking Bird, Wide Sargasso Sea.
Which was your favorite: gah, at least 5 of these.
Which was your least favorite: ditto.

Allah Grendizer!

I love the old cartoons, they don't make them like that anymore.

Remember Khumasy? It was a bit similar to Grendizer. That and Captain Majid, Bombo, Sally and sanafer were my favourites.

Great site by the way!

purg Wow..they still air that?

delicate I was too old to appreciate most of those. Here's my list:

1. Al-fata Yaqoot (zoro princess kinda thing)
2. Ab6al Il-Mala3ib (the original captain majid - and much better in my opinion ;)
3. 7ikayat il-3alam (each episode had a different fairy tale from a different country)
4. Bell wa Sebastian (they ran that 3 Ramadan season in a row)
5. Lady Lady (I'm a girly girl sometimes)

I can sing the theme songs to any of those, and usually do so whenever someone asks :P

unknown Cartoons are DA BOMB!

If I can find an Arabic movie with English subitles, I am sure I can learn more :)

for those of you interested. there is a store located in the first floor of Al Walla complex in hawalli that sells the old shows on dvds.

there is also a video shop in rihab complex ground floor that sells the cartoons on vhs. i picked up rajol hadidy for kd1 or 1.5 something like that.

Hey! I love Lady Lady too, but I didn't mention it because when I ever I do everyone says they were way too old when that came out?! Finally someone who agrees with me.

Haya ma3hom haya ma3hooooom Bill o Sebastein! (Thats another of the cartoons that I like and noone else does)
You have brought back a world of old memories.

Ok McArabian you have got to be the one that has the answer to my unsolved question of over 15yrs!

There was a cartoon and I don't know the name, but heres a bit of the storyline:
It was a girl called 7anan, living with her older brother and father in the country. They were farmers and they had a bowl of soup and the small little khubiz for dinner everyday. There mother was dead. 7anan made friends with a boy nsait isma, and one time all three of them were playing far away in the wady. 7anan's little brother fell off the cliff and down somewhere and broke his leg. He became crippled for life. O thats all i remember. But that was my favourite when I was little and my mom used to call me 7anano cuz its a bit like my name. Noone seems to remember what it was. Please tell me what its called.

Hi, just wanted to thank you for the post, it brought back memories!
The good old days, when brand names didn’t exist (at least in Kuwait), and micky mouse and/or popeye meant cartoons in general!!

Its nice to see people who can remember Grandizer and Alrajol al7adeedi! “fe al ite7ad quowa” !!

I used to like Sindibad, Lulu al9a’3eerah and Captain Majid.. Wasn’t there a Lion King cartoon as well? I think it was called “al laith al abyath”.

I agree with you about the 100 best novels, most of my favorite books are not included :(

I never saw the show & whenever my friends talk about it they get so into it and I just feel like an outcast :( I guess that's one of the sacrifices your family makes when it decides to live abroad throughout your childhood, that and getting your 5 year old son hooked on Bugs Bunny, Bernstein Bears, Carebears, Road Runner & (gulp) My Little Pony! :P

mushmushi Jongar! Completely forgot about that - now that's old school :)

unknown but..why? I never understood the deal with Xmas music until I cam to the States. They start it right after Halloween is over - 2 months of Xmas music! No sane person can handle that :P

purg Used to watch French anime when I was a kid. My favourite was the one with the zodiac warriors.

williamI'm not sure any of these toons have English subtitles on them. Maybe you can ask some of your Arabic speaking friends to translate some of the episodes for you. Good Google skillz btw :)

mark thanks for the info :)

delicate Walla madri, 7abibti. It sounds so bloody familiar though. All I could come up with was Heidi but I know they didn't have a crippled boy there, just the rich girl in the wheelchair. Sorry, hon. I'll definitely get back to you if I remember it.

equalizer Thanks for that website. Wow, talk about a trip down memory lane. They even had Senan!
Not sure about the racist cartoons, I know another blogger is trying to get a collection together of old racist Looney Toons. I was never bothered by the racism of those cartoons, I think I was too young to understand most of the negative connotations.

CD That's pretty much how I built most of my arabic vocabulary. That and old Tarzan graphic novels - go figure.

don veto That guy has the arabic songs at his website ;) Those songs *still* get me all excited :)

i Your welcome, I had fun with this post :) Yeah, I remeber those too! But I have to admit, nothing got me going like Grendizer. Hmm..except for Captain Harlock maybe, but that's a whole other story :P

7tenths What kind of sick, repressed, deprived childhood did you have that you were never able to watch Grendizer?! Okok, for real now. You can pick up the series from the places mentioned in the comments or from the ebay link I posted to see what the hype is all about. If it makes you feel any better, I've seen ALL of the cartoons you've mentioned :

I don't want to be a cook or a fireman,
I don't want to play trombone in a marching band,
I just want to be a carebear - like you!

There you go, and there goes my dignity.

Interesting list, why did they start at 1923?To exclude Ulysses?Im surprised that This Side of Paradise was not included;miles better than the Great Gatsby in my opinion. These lists are meant to provoke discussion of course.Ive read lots of Nabokov, but never Lolita;am holding it at the moment. The thing about the list is that Ive bought more of the books than I have read. The author of Lolita was a great Lepidopterist of course, and by the way, read his marvellous biography:Speak,Memory if you have not done so yet.On the subject of Lepidoptera,I can recommend a very interesting short book, written by a very courageous man, although it is not a novel, called The diving bell and the butterfly ( sound very amusing.

Making cookies, fresh snowfall, church and the choir, decorating the tree, shopping, carrolling, opening gifts, holiday crafts... all of it! Through all of the special holiday events there's always the music, so when I hear it I get all warm and fuzzy inside. Like certain scents can take you back to a time and place? Christmas music does that for me. :-) Corny, huh? And yeah, already listening to it this year.

Dude, I had a major crush on Grendizer, too! It's ok, all of us sad kids were in Kuwait at the same time! I don't remember too many of the arabic cartoons I saw before starting school and switching to English, but those were Happy Days, my friend!

Other than Grendizer, I used to watch Kimba, the white lion, Voltron, Thundercats, Transformers, Tom & Jerry, the Gummi bears (damn theme song is stuck in my head now!), and the usual assortment of HB and Loony Toons. Didn't the Smurfs also air on KTV? I rememer that they used to air it in English and in Arabic.

sailor True. I know I did :)

i I'd tell you, but you'll love me a little less..

carbon Yeah, and then have the audacity to call it 'All Time'. Eh, it's Time Magazine - shouldn't have expected much from them. Lolita was the only Nabokov book I remember reading. It was a long time ago in highschool when I picked it up (back in the day when everyone else was reading Flowers in the Attic). I remember it was disturbingly funny, but it didn't leave that much of an impression. I'll keep a lookout for your recommendation and pick it up if I say it. Thanks :)

hopeless Aww..didn't mean to mak you cry ;) But I don't agree with you - some of the cartoons nowadays are pretty amazing. Pickup 'Invader Zim', it's a feast for the eyes and disturbing enough (not in a stupid Cow and Chicken or Wren and Stimpy way) that they had to take it off the air. I like the guys who do PowerPuff girls, Samurai Jack, and the early Dexter's Lab episodes too. There's good stuff out there, you just have to find it, and accept that, for the most part, humor replaced dramatic story arcs (they left that for the Anime crews in Japan).

eclectic Sure it was bad dubbing most of the time. Grendizer was a special case though - the guy who did Duke Fleed's voice actually had a great deep voice. I fell in love with that voice - until I actually saw the actor in some weird Arabic period drama. He looked nothing like Duke Fleed! I loved WB cartoons (especially Marvin the Martian) - but I need my drama and angst fix too. I think that's why I liked the badly dubbed Arabic cartoons so much, a lot of them had adult themes (mostly dealing with death, loss, honor and betrayal ) which meant the writers respected kids enough to let them deal with these themes.

Mama I used to think it was Fleet too (and wondered the same thing as a kid) until I visited that website and realized it was Fleed with a D. That answered that question ;)

Unknown Fair enough. I'll never tease you about Christmas music again (well, maybe once more, but that's it!)

siriqbal Hey! A familiar face :) When I was still in elementary school I got caught singing the them song for Kimba the White Lion in the middle of math class (during class work time). Very traumatizing. That cartoon has bittersweet memories for me. Never did like the Smurfs, in any language ;)

Misguided Hopeless Poet has a sensitive soul, leave him alone :P

I mean, what about Atlas Shrugged, or Farenheit 451, or Watership Down, or Stranger in a Strange Land. Scarlet Letter? Great Expectations? About the only saving grace, in my opinion, is that they had Snow Crash on there. But still...

At least there wasn't any John Grisham...

a3sab Yeah, it was alrajul al-hadeedi :) (I just realized spontaneous beat me to it - so there's your answer).

bitzer I could see how some of the books would make the list -but seriously, Lord of the Flies? or a Judy Blume book? If I have time, I might look up the criteria they used to choose these books. The list gets more confusing the more I think about it.

I only remember the word "Jonga", Could anyone give me info on this?

My friend in Nebraska has asked me to help her with her laptop (i live in AZ ,she used to live here too). She downloaded a bunch of viruses disguised as a virus danger warning from the main OS (ironic huh?) all I know to do is to take it to a computer store like best buy or get a free anti virus software. Any ideas on things that could help? by the way the thing that did it i think was called the antyvirus software fyi. santoramaa
